PRITINDER (PEPI) KHARA by Melissa Howes-Vitek
Many artists draw on their life experiences to create work that embodies their true spirit while still managing to appeal to the viewer. Few however, manage to put all of that into a single subject matter as clearly and as beautifully as local artist and businessman Pritinder Khara.

IN THE BUSINESS OF INSPIRATION… by Melissa Howes-Vitek
Nestled along Patrick Street is one of the newest additions to historic downtown Frederick. Owner Kim Grinev calls it a one-of-a kind, creative destination. The space, dubbed Art Tree, serves not only as a retail outlet for craft and art supplies, but also as a walk-in, no waiting, hands-on art and craft studio for kids and adults alike.

CYCLE FREDERICK by Jeanne Marie Ford

"It's like riding a bike,” the old adage goes. But I am living proof that it is indeed possible to forget how. Thirty-odd years after bidding farewell to my lavender childhood ride, I climbed aboard a ten-speed and discovered that I couldn’t get both feet off the ground.

AS THE FERRIS WHEEL TURNS by Erik McCabe Anderson

Having lived in Frederick County since I was three (about 20 years), like many natives, I can easily name several important firsts that took place over the years at the Great Frederick Fair. I won my first goldfish (R.I.P., Mr. Bubbles), experienced my first thrill ride, enjoyed my first gyro, got my first up-close look at many farm animals, and so much more. But none of them is dearer to my memory than my first date—well, my first attempt at one, anyway.

ALWAYS A GOOD HAIR DAY by Jessica Girdwain
When the staff at Thomas Scott Salon celebrates their 25th anniversary on August 16th this year, they’ll commemorate it in a familiar way: By hosting a runway fashion show in honor of Heartly House, a local charity. The Redken-concept salon, located on Baughman’s Lane, does more than just turn out up-to-the-minute hairstyles and provide top-notch massages and manis, but constantly dreams up ways to reach out to the community through fundraisers for a variety of local organizations, like Heartly House, Frederick Food Bank, and Hospice of Frederick County—their food drives and other events have raised nearly $70,000 for one charity alone.

BAKING WITH MOXIE by Naomi Pearson
What do you get when you mix non-profit management, social services and pastries? You get Cakes for Cause and the soon-to-open Moxie. Cakes for Cause, the brainchild of Elin Ross, is a vocational program that prepares at-risk youth—such as those “aging out” of foster care or living in public housing—for careers in the culinary field and Moxie is the program’s (soon to open) retail operation, a bakery and café on North Market Street. Cakes for Cause works in partnership with local social service agencies which identify and refer potential participants. The six-month program is designed to help young people successfully transition to adulthood and to assist them in becoming self-sufficient and breaking free of the cycle of dependence on social services.

SWIMMIN' UPSTREAM by Joanna Lubbes
"You're a hard swimmin’ fish,” Demian Lewis’ stepfather used to say after a hard day of work. And Hard Swimmin’ Fish this local blues band is, working its way through the Frederick music scene, showcasing their incredible talent and love for the bluesy grassroots music they perform.

NEW YORK MEETS FREDERICK IN THE ATTIC by Erik McCabe Anderson
Taking a trip to Quynn’s Attic in downtown Frederick transported me to both a different time and place as I approached its almost hidden alley entrance. I swear I could feel Elliot Ness and his band of Untouchables hot on my trail as I snuck down the wooden ramp under a long awning that leads to the little side-entrance door. As I stepped into the darkened speakeasy, I got a neat little thrill realizing that I had yet to climb an old-fashion winding stairway before finally discovering the jazzy hot spot I had heretofore only heard mentioned by a handful of trusted informants.

ON YOUR MARC, GET SET—RIDE! by Noami Pearson
Six times a day, the wail of a train whistle echoes through Frederick—thrice in the morning, thrice in the evening. Clusters of bleary-eyed commuters (perhaps you among them) climb aboard the four passenger cars behind the engine in the thin dawn light. The same folks drag their less bleary, but just as weary bodies off the train in the late-waning sunbeams of eventide.

IN VINO, VERITABLE BLISS by Jeanne Marie Ford
Swirl it in the glass and regard the deep color; imbibe the hints of dark chocolate, red raspberry, plum, vanilla. Pair it with truffles or cheese. Heaven. Or perhaps more like Tuscany. Burgundy. Napa Valley. Argentina. Wine has the unique power to transport.
