FiNDiT2: The owner

There’s a new spa in town and owner Noemi “Emmy” Costlow is ready to share her healing talents with the Frederick community.

“I love the vibe here,” she said. “I want people to know that I feel at home. I’ve finally found a place where I can not only give to the public, but it also gives me a lot of satisfaction.”

Costlow owns Emmy’s Harvest, a holistic spa located on the third floor of 263 West Patrick Street. This spring, she moved to the area from San Antonio, Texas, where her healing journey began.

Inspiration

After moving from Howard County, MD to San Antonio, TX in 2010, Costlow decided she was tired of working at an office job. She wanted to make more of an impact on people's lives, so she quit her job and began attending esthetician school.

After completing her courses, Costlow began performing facials at a large spa in the city, but she says it was difficult for her to feel like she was making a difference in the lives of her clients there.

“What I wanted to do is make a difference in the person’s life rather than just one time,” she said.

It wasn’t long until Costlow opened Idunna’s Harvest, named for the Norse goddess of youth, in San Antonio. Appropriately, the name can also mean “ever young,” “rejuvenator” or “rejuvenating one.” As Costlow puts it, Idunna’s Harvest is currently “sleeping.” She could not transfer the LLC from Texas to Maryland, thus the name change.

Costlow uses reiki, or energy healing, to encourage patient wellness. Reiki can be performed by using palm healing or hands-on healing.

Stepping it up

One day, a client came to Idunna’s Harvest for a facial appointment and told Costlow she was having a terrible week and desperately needed help feeling better.

“I thought, ‘I really have to step up my game here,’” Costlow recalled. She performed the facial with the intent of relieving the client’s pain, and was astounded at the results; after Costlow was finished, the client got up in a euphoric daze.

“She looks at me and asks ‘What did you do to me?’” Costlow said. “And that’s when I discovered there’s so much more than doing a facial.”

Now, what sets Costlow apart from many other spas is that as a certified reiki master, she performs holistic, reiki-infused facials. Reiki, also known as energy healing, is a Japanese technique where it is said that the practitioner can transfer energy to the patient to encourage physical or emotional healing.

“Everything is energy,” Costlow said. “When we start to understand that, we can master that energy.”

What to expect

Upon arriving to the cozy third floor space, clients can expect to be greeted warmly and given a cup of hot tea while Costlow reviews the client’s expectations for the service and answers any questions. She books an hour for each service and always allows half an hour in between clients so no one feels rushed.

She also welcomes potential clients to call her for a free consultation and to discuss what services would be best for the individual.

All of the products used at Emmy’s Harvest are natural and holistic, and treat a variety of conditions like acne, aging, hyperpigmentation and dry skin. Clients who want to take it a step further can try an enzyme peel or an acid peel.

She also offers holistic life coaching and other packages where she devotes half a day or an entire day to an individual's healing. During this time, she can do a Wheel of Life assessment or an Akashic records reading with spa services included. At the end of the session, she sends the client home with a kit of supplements to help them take care of themselves at home.

The best part of her job is seeing the impact she’s had on the health and well-being of her clients, she says.

“My investment is in you, and that’s what makes me feel good about what I do,” Costlow said.
