Everything you need to know about Frederick's Independence Day celebrationFrederick's Fourth is quickly approaching and you may have some burning questions: Where is the best place to view fireworks in Frederick? Can I bring my own beer? Is there anything else to do other than watch the fireworks? We have answers! If you live in or around Frederick, MD and are planning on celebrating the Fourth of July locally, let us be your guide to Frederick's Fourth in Baker Park. Activities and Events There are plenty of things to do at Frederick’s Fourth of July celebration whether you’re young or young at heart. The fun starts around noon, so bring your sunscreen and plan to spend the day downtown!
FoodPlenty of food vendors will make sure you don’t get hangry while celebrating Independence Day.
Beer, Wine and SpiritsBYOB (or wine, or hard lemonade, or whatever you fancy) is prohibited, but not to worry: a $5 one-time cover fee will get event-goers into any of the three beer, wine & spirits gardens set up for the Fourth. Each of the three gardens are located within Baker Park and will serve $5 12-ounce pours of local and national brews and 5-ounce servings of sangria, wine and signature cocktails from local distilleries. One of the three gardens allows guests under 21 as long as they are accompanied by a guardian.
FireworksSo, where are the best places to see Frederick’s Fourth of July fireworks? Since this year's bigger-and-better fireworks will be shot from Parkway Elementary School beginning at dusk, the best viewing locations are the Fleming Avenue Swimming Pool area, the Frederick High School lawn and the carillon area in Baker Park. You can still catch a glimpse of the show from the Drees Homes Bandshell seating area and other areas outside of Baker Park, however the views here are obstructed.
View this handy map from Celebrate Frederick to help you figure out where you'd like to watch. If you know of any other great place to watch the show and are willing to share it, leave us a comment! Final notes: We know you love your furry family members, but remember that fireworks can send dogs into a panic, so please don’t bring them to this event. Carroll Parkway between College Avenue and N. Jefferson street will be CLOSED to pedestrian traffic between 10 a.m. and 10 p.m. since it's in the fireworks fire line. This area, along with the Parkway Elementary School grounds, is also closed to seating.

FiNDiT3: The giveawayIf you've been keeping up with this week's FiNDiT123 about downtown Frederick's newest holistic spa, perhaps you're motivated to try one of the spa treatments for yourself. It's your lucky day, because we have the perfect opportunity: Emmy’s Harvest is offering one free 60-minute detoxifying body wrap service (worth $99!) to a lucky winner. All you have to do is comment on our Facebook post with one other spa service you’d eventually like to try at Emmy’s Harvest. Be sure to read this week’s other FiNDiT123 blog posts below to learn more about the business and the services that are offered. What's a body wrap? You've heard of facials. Perhaps you've gotten one, or it's even part of your weekly schedule. However, one of the lesser known spa treatments is detoxifying body wraps, and Emmy's Harvest proudly offers this service. But what exactly is a body wrap, and what can it do? The 60-minute treatment uses a blend of USA-made M'Lis Natural Therapy products that include cellulite-targeting niacin, circulation-inducing cinnamon and deeply nourishing aloe. After the products are applied, the body is wrapped in plastic and the patient is covered with a towel or sheet for approximately half an hour. “[The wraps] actually detoxify the body and the tissues,” said Emmy's Harvest owner Noemi "Emmy" Costlow. “You can see that it tightens the skin and hydrates it.” After the session is complete, patients can expect to notice slimming effects as well as glowing, hydrated and firmer skin. Contest rulesNo purchase necessary. Must be 21 or older to enter.
Contest runs from 12 p.m. Friday, June 21 to 12 p.m. Monday, June 24. One winner will be selected randomly at 12 p.m. Monday, June 24 and will be notified through a tagged Facebook post and a private message with instructions on redeeming the service. This contest is run by Pulse Publishing; it is not endorsed, sponsored, or promoted by Facebook in any way. FiNDiT2: The ownerThere’s a new spa in town and owner Noemi “Emmy” Costlow is ready to share her healing talents with the Frederick community. “I love the vibe here,” she said. “I want people to know that I feel at home. I’ve finally found a place where I can not only give to the public, but it also gives me a lot of satisfaction.” Costlow owns Emmy’s Harvest, a holistic spa located on the third floor of 263 West Patrick Street. This spring, she moved to the area from San Antonio, Texas, where her healing journey began. InspirationAfter moving from Howard County, MD to San Antonio, TX in 2010, Costlow decided she was tired of working at an office job. She wanted to make more of an impact on people's lives, so she quit her job and began attending esthetician school. After completing her courses, Costlow began performing facials at a large spa in the city, but she says it was difficult for her to feel like she was making a difference in the lives of her clients there. “What I wanted to do is make a difference in the person’s life rather than just one time,” she said. It wasn’t long until Costlow opened Idunna’s Harvest, named for the Norse goddess of youth, in San Antonio. Appropriately, the name can also mean “ever young,” “rejuvenator” or “rejuvenating one.” As Costlow puts it, Idunna’s Harvest is currently “sleeping.” She could not transfer the LLC from Texas to Maryland, thus the name change. Stepping it upOne day, a client came to Idunna’s Harvest for a facial appointment and told Costlow she was having a terrible week and desperately needed help feeling better. “I thought, ‘I really have to step up my game here,’” Costlow recalled. She performed the facial with the intent of relieving the client’s pain, and was astounded at the results; after Costlow was finished, the client got up in a euphoric daze. “She looks at me and asks ‘What did you do to me?’” Costlow said. “And that’s when I discovered there’s so much more than doing a facial.” Now, what sets Costlow apart from many other spas is that as a certified reiki master, she performs holistic, reiki-infused facials. Reiki, also known as energy healing, is a Japanese technique where it is said that the practitioner can transfer energy to the patient to encourage physical or emotional healing. “Everything is energy,” Costlow said. “When we start to understand that, we can master that energy.” What to expectUpon arriving to the cozy third floor space, clients can expect to be greeted warmly and given a cup of hot tea while Costlow reviews the client’s expectations for the service and answers any questions. She books an hour for each service and always allows half an hour in between clients so no one feels rushed. She also welcomes potential clients to call her for a free consultation and to discuss what services would be best for the individual. All of the products used at Emmy’s Harvest are natural and holistic, and treat a variety of conditions like acne, aging, hyperpigmentation and dry skin. Clients who want to take it a step further can try an enzyme peel or an acid peel. She also offers holistic life coaching and other packages where she devotes half a day or an entire day to an individual's healing. During this time, she can do a Wheel of Life assessment or an Akashic records reading with spa services included. At the end of the session, she sends the client home with a kit of supplements to help them take care of themselves at home. The best part of her job is seeing the impact she’s had on the health and well-being of her clients, she says. “My investment is in you, and that’s what makes me feel good about what I do,” Costlow said. Mind, body, and spirit are important to Costlow as she performs any spa service. That's why she infuses her services with reiki, a Japanese healing and stress-relieving technique said to channel healing energy by means of touch. Often, clients leave in awe of the relaxation they feel after their session, she said. "Clients are looking for a place where they can come and be taken care of," Costlow added. Products used at Emmy's Harvest include Eminence Organic Skin Care, M'Lis nutritional supplements and body wraps and doTERRA essential oils. While Costlow also accepts male customers, Costlow acknowledges that female clients are her main focus. "I want to let women know they have a safe place to come," she said. For men looking for a rejuvenating spa treatment, Emmy's Harvest offers a Gentleman's Facial with a relaxing scalp treatment. "Men love that," Costlow said. This Sunday is Father's Day! Are you still looking for a gift to show Dad how much you appreciate all he does? Instead of gifting him a new tie or another watch, this year give Dad the gift of a memorable Frederick experience. Whether he's a history buff, music enthusiast, foodie, or lover of the arts, Frederick has plenty of father-approved events to choose from this Sunday, and we've compiled the best events into a handy list below: Thai New Year Water FestivalThis can’t-miss cultural celebration of the Thai New Year perfectly coincides with Father’s Day, so bring Dad to Carroll Creek from noon to 6 p.m. and enjoy traditional Thai performers and dancers, food, art, vendors, a beer garden, Thai boxing demonstrations, and more! The best part? Admission to this lively event is FREE. As an added bonus: there will also be raffles throughout the day with chances to win Sumittra gift cards, water guns, and traditional Thai scarves. Summer Concert Series: The McCartney ExperienceA must-see for any Beatle-loving dad, The McCartney Experience provides a premiere tribute to Sir Paul McCartney. After enjoying a delicious dinner downtown, bring Dad to the Baker Park Bandshell at 7 p.m. for this lively show featuring music from the early years of Beatlemania. The event helps give back to the community, too: in lieu of admission, attendees are asked to bring a canned food item or cash donation for the Frederick Community Action Agency Food Bank Program. Historic Frederick Walking TourYour history-loving dad will love watching the bygone days of Frederick come alive on the Historic Frederick Walking Tour. From 1:30 to 3 this Father’s Day afternoon, knowledgeable guides share the fascinating stories that make up our beloved downtown. The tour starts at the Historical Society of Frederick at 24 E. Church St. Tickets can be purchased on the Heritage Frederick site or at the door. Pride and Prejudice at the METFor the dad that appreciates theatrical comedy, the Maryland Ensemble Theatre's last performance of Pride and Prejudice is a perfect Father’s Day gift. Grab some tickets and take Dad to the 3 p.m. showing of this hilarious adaptation by playwright Kate Hamill. After the show, take advantage of MET’s downtown location and walk to Market Street for dinner. Daddy's Day at Taco Daddy CantinaCelebrate Father's Day the Taco Daddy way, with tasty food and drink specials all day long. As a bonus, dads will receive a complimentary Taco Daddy mason jar glass as a gift. We recommend reserving a table in advance. Did this post help you make plans for Father's Day? We hope so!
